                             BACHELOR OF BIBLICAL AND THEOLOGICAL STUDIES

The purpose of United Christian Bible University is to familiarize students with the content and concepts of the Bible, the appropriate methodologies for the interpretation and the application of biblical teaching. Students are taught to use research tools which will aide independent study of biblical texts and topics. For career purposes, the major may be used as a terminal degree, preparing students for employment in a local church by achieving a level of biblical literacy that will enable them to be active in church leadership and teaching ministries.

Students are trained in basic biblical and theological knowledge. They are encouraged to develop skills that enable them to take into account the original linguistic, literary, historical, and cultural contexts of the Bible. Students are thereby enabled to consider critically religious traditions, beliefs, and practice in order to bring them into conformity with biblical revelation and to evaluate all of life and thought from the perspective of biblical principles.

 The ultimate goal of Theological Studies is to ensure that the church’s proclamation and the individual’s life is faithful to God’s revelation of Himself in Scripture. Students with good theological training will know how to evaluate critically their own personal theological leaning, be aware and respectful of other theological positions, and be able to distinguish those values that are distinctly Christian from those that the secular world espouses

These objectives are attained through the academic processes which enable students to formulate a constructive, personal stance of Christian faith, to become aware of how culture affected biblical revelation    .

INTERNSHIP

The internship, normally taken immediately prior to the final year of seminary study, is required of all B.Div. And B.Th. candidates. The internship program is administered by the Director of Internship at the University.

THESIS OPTION

There is also the option of doing a thesis as part of this degree. For those students who demonstrate sufficient academic success, we encourage you to pursue the thesis option in conjunction with a specialty. The thesis allows you to take a particular agreed-upon topic and, by working with an academic mentor, undertake your own research into this subject area.

The following program aims to prepare students for service in the church as pulpit ministers, Youth/Children's Pastor, elders, deacons, missionaries/church planters, and Bible teachers. Also, this program helps prepare students for allied Christian leadership positions in youth services or as ministers of education at large congregations or chaplains in hospitals, the armed forces, and correctional institutions

THE FOLLOWING ARE KEY PROGRAM AIMS:

•             To provide breadth of acquaintance with the disciplines/subject areas that make up the academic study of Christian 'theology', including the scholarly issues and approaches involved, and more advanced study/knowledge of selected disciplines/subject areas, according to the student's interests, abilities and preferences;

•             To orient students to Christianity as a 'world religion', through a historical approach that takes account of Christianity in various cultures;

•             To provide students with opportunities to reflect on Christianity's historic and continuing encounter with other major world religions;

•             To develop students' experience and abilities in researching, comprehension, analysis, critical thinking, and oral and written communication;

•             For those hoping/intending to enter the ordained ministry of Christian churches, to provide rounded academic training to equip them for reflective practice of ministry;

•             To equip students for ordained ministry or a variety of other appropriate careers or further academic study.

•             HIS 1298 Old Testament Survey An overview of the Old Testament, tracing its teaching with respect to historical background and literary character.4 Units

•             BITH 1222 Spiritual Formation In this class Spiritual formation will seek the shaping process with reference to the spiritual dimension of a person's life. Christian spiritual formation thus refers to the process by which believers become more fully conformed and united to Christ. 3 Units

•             GEO 8811- Geography of the Holy Land-  An investigation into Historical Geography of the Holy Land, Especially in Relation to the History of Israel and of the Early Church 3 Units

•             HIS 1398 New Testament Survey An overview of the New Testament, tracing its teaching with respect to historical background and literary character. 4 Units

BITH 2398 Old Testament Theology  An investigation into Old Testament Theology emphasizing the Mosaic Cult, Prophetism and Judaism   3 Units  Pilgrimage to the Holy Land for further studies 3 Units

•             BITH 2396 New Testament Theology- A study in New Testament Theology will cover a branch of the Christian disciplines which traces themes through the authors of the NT and then amalgamates those individual motifs into a single comprehensive whole. Thus it studies the progressive revelation of God in terms of the life situation at the time of writing and the delineates the underlying thread which ties it together.3 Units

•             BITH 4576 Systematic Theology I. A critical investigation into the content and contemporary significance of the Christian faith, emphasizing biblical foundations, philosophic presuppositions and comprehensiveness.3 Units

•             EN 5400-Principles of Rhetoric An introductory writing course that includes instruction in practical reasoning and the principles of rhetoric. 3 Units

•             BITH 5476-Theology of Soteriology- The Soteriology of the New Testament is a critical investigation into the content of "Salvation" that Jesus has provided for mankind. 3 Units

 

LANG 3465 INTRODUCTION TO BIBLICAL HEBREW. Introduction to Biblical Hebrew covers some essential elements of the grammar of Biblical Hebrew and introduces some basic vocabulary. It introduces students to aspects of translation of Biblical Hebrew as well as the main lexical aids. On completion of the subject students should be able to translate basic nominal and verbal sentences.3 Units

•             BITH 4376 The Psalms-Songs of Israel and the Church A study of the spiritual and literary legacy of the book of Psalms. The collection will be analyzed according to literary types, and the individual psalms studied according to their type and content. The use of Psalms in the history of the Church as a vehicle of worship will be a daily devotional focus to begin each class 3 Units

HIS 5478 Intertestamental History A survey of intertestamental history from 600 to 5 B.C. with special attention given to the literature of the period as a theological bridge between the Old and New Covenants. Areas of study include OT Apocrypha and selections from the OT Pseudepigrapha, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and rabbinic Judaism. 3 Units

•             PIL 6534 Introduction to Christian Logic- A Study in Christian logic will study both  classical syllogism; and modern logic which  is the study, primarily, of the calculus of propositions 3 Units

•             BITH 4522 Old Testament Wisdom Literature. A selection from the Old Testament wisdom books, Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Songs of Solomon, and Lamentations, The apocryphal books of Jesus ben Sirach and the Wisdom of Solomon may also be read and studied in relation to canonical wisdom. 3 Units

•             BITH 7876 Pauline Theology-A study of the life and thought of Paul as found in the book of Acts and in Paul’s New Testament letters. The course will synthesize the major categories of Pauline thought and emphasize their value for faith today. 3 Units The footsteps of Paul Tour is available 3 Units

•             BITH 5600 Calvinism Vs Armianism Theology- Reading and analysis of the Institutes of the Christian Religion, emphasizing Calvin's method, material arrangement, and biblical theological content compared to John Armians Theological content. Elective 3 Units

BITH 5678 Theology in Paul's First Epistle to the Corinthians A section-by-section survey of 1 Corinthians dealing with the issues of the nature of the Church, Christian behavior and social responsibility, sexuality, marriage and divorce, Christian worship, the spiritual gifts, and the resurrection. 3 Units

BITH 5543 Theology in the Acts of the Apostles A study of the Book of Acts focused on the birth and development of the apostolic church, its dissociation from Judaism, and the progress of the missionary enterprise. 3 Units Footsteps of Paul Tour 3 Units

HIS 9977 Perspectives From Church History I- Examines the key figures, events and ideas from the Apostolic age to the Reformation in Christian history and places them in context. 3 Units

•             MUS 8778 Introduction to Hymnology- An introductory class of hymnology with an investigation of hymns. songs and Spiritual songs will be the primary focus of this class. 3 Units

•             BITH 4388 Introduction to Apologetics- Introduction to Christian apologetics is a defense to answering any and all critics who oppose or question the revelation of God in Christ and the Bible 3 Units

•             BITH 6677 Pneumatology -An investigation of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit, with reference to the biblical foundations and significant historical and contemporary developments. Trinitarian issues will be discussed, as well as an emphasis on the Spirit’s cosmic work. Additionally, this course aims to encourage a deeper understanding of the Spirit’s role in our lives.3 Units

•             BITH 7733 Biblical Interpretation and Hermeneutics. A survey of hermeneutical theory discussing how author, text, and reader work together as meaning emerges from a text. These insights will then be applied to the Bible, giving the student an interpretive strategy for exegete biblical texts and bringing their meaning into the modern world. 3 Units

•             LANG 1220- Introduction to Latin- Using Wheelocks Latin this class will cover some essential elements of the grammar of Latin and introduces some basic vocabulary.  On completion of the subject students should be able to translate basic nominal and verbal sentences. 3 Units

•             PHI 9942- Introduction to Christian Philosophy-An Introduction to Christian Philosophy. tries to  set forth not only a critique of non-Christian philosophies, but a positive construction based on Scripture alone. Because Christian philosophy is unique, and is based entirely on propositional revelation. 3 Units

•             PC 2234-Personal Foundations-Focused on the importance of self-understanding for spiritual and emotional well-being as well as effective ministry to hurting people, an investigation of the impact of personal and family history on theological outlook, emotional congruence, relational attractions and moral decisions. Several personal assessments as well as one or more therapy sessions are an integral part of this course.(this class is only available by textbook which the student must purchase)3 Units 

•             BITH 4563 Systematic Theology II A continuation of a critical investigation into the content and contemporary significance of the Christian faith, emphasizing biblical foundations, philosophic presuppositions and comprehensiveness. 3 Units

•             HIS 3452 Reformation and Modern Church History-The study of Christianity from the Reformation to the present, with source material readings. Also the development of Christian thought and apply church history to contemporary ideas and issues. The course also includes a brief overview of historic revivals and world missions.  3 Units

•             LANG 4588 Introduction to NT Greek Introduction to New Testament Greek covers some essential elements of the grammar of Greek and introduces some basic vocabulary. It introduces students to aspects of translation of New Testament Greek  as well as the main lexical aids. On completion of the subject students should be able to translate basic nominal and verbal sentences. 3 Units

BITH 5600 Systematic Theology III A continuation of a critical investigation into the content and contemporary significance of the Christian faith, emphasizing biblical foundations, philosophic presuppositions and comprehensiveness. 3 Units

•             PC 4522-Premarital Preparation and Counseling techniques applied to dating and courtship, engagement and premarital adjustments. Principles and structures of premarital counseling are stressed and demonstrated (this class is only available by textbook which the student must purchase)3 Units

•             BITH 8877- Word and Sacraments- Preaching of the Word we nourish the faith the Spirit begat in us first by assembling together with other Christians to hear the word of God preached to us. This is the ordinary means the Lord works faith in us, a means which He has promised to bless and bind Himself. (2)The Administering and Receiving of the Sacraments which Jesus commanded us to partake of "till He comes.   3 Units

•             BITH 3300 Introduction to World Missions The nature of Christian outreach; a study of principles, history, and methodology of worldwide missions 3 Units

•             BITH 9954 Old Testament Exegesis A practical study of the procedures for doing sound exegesis in the various portions of the Old Testament.  The method will include the study of words, poetics, textual criticism, syntax, biblical theology, and practical exegetical exposition in the different genres of the Hebrew Bible. 3 Units

•             LANG 9853 Introduction to Greek Grammar Introduction to Greek Grammar covers some essential elements of the grammar of Greek and introduces some basic Syntax, Mood and Tense. For learners with beginning Ancient Greek experience, this Class provides excellent discussion and examples of Greek Syntax Elective.3 Units

•             PC 9987 Marital Counseling explores the foundations of marriage and marital conflict from Scriptural and psychological perspectives. Reviews approaches to counseling and explores change and growth procedures and skills (this class is only available by textbook which the student must purchase)3 Units

•             BITH 989 Ecclesiology-An intensive study of significant aspects of the church related to its nature, purpose and Government. Particular attention directed to current problematic areas  3 Units

Using the textbook and the textual notes in the lectures, construct an exegesis (of 10 pages) on a segment of Romans of your choosing. 3 Units

•             BITH 8899 Church Planting Models and Strategies A survey and analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of various church planting models and strategies used around the world. Identifies key factors which the church planter can implement in a context specific, phase-out oriented church planting strategy. (this class is only available by textbook which the student must purchase)3 Units 

•             BITH 4686 Christology Study of the person and work of Christ with reference to the biblical foundations and significant historical and contemporary developments. Trinitarian issues will be discussed. Additionally, this course aims to encourage a deeper understanding of Christ's working in our daily lives 3 Units

•             BITH 8897- Johannine Theology-The theology of the Johannine writings, with emphasis upon the concepts that the writer himself emphasizes.

PIL 5698 Christian Ethics An examination of the history, methodology, and content of Christian ethics with application to specific contemporary issues.. 3 Units

•             BITH 4533 Advanced Apologetics- Advanced apologetics is a continuation of a defense to answering any and all critics who oppose or question the revelation of God in Christ and the Bible. 3 Units   

•             PC 9998 Foundations of Pastoral Care and Counseling Explores ministry to people who request counseling in church and Para-church contexts. Starting with relationship building skills, students will discover their limits in help-giving, and learn appropriate referral process. Much of the course focus will then be an exploration of building small communities within a church ministry.(this class is only available by textbook which the student must purchase)3 Units              

•             BITH 7786 Theology in Millennial Views A careful and intensive study of the three main eschatological views relative to the millennium system; consideration of the leading millennial writings.. 3 Units

•             REL2222 World Religions- An examination of the history, and content of World Religions with application to specific contemporary issues.. 3 Units

•             PC 9999 Advanced Pastoral Counseling This course moves beyond learning relationship skills to developing skills that help people with the realization of physical, spiritual, emotional and moral issues in their lives. Secondly, there is a focus on skills that help people take responsibility for the awareness they have gained. The spiritual transformation process is integrated into the development of these skills(this class is only available by textbook which the student must purchase)3 Units

•             BITH 4405 Pastoral Theology I, II-Pastoral Theology examines the practical application of theology in the pastoral context. This class seeks to approach a practical theological expression to the ministry of the Pastor.3 Units per class

•             BITH 6552 Church Growth- Independent studies into Church growth. Permission by College to enter into class 3 Units

•             BITH 3336 Cultural Studies- Independent Studies into a specific culture. Permission by College to enter into class. 3 Units

                                                   CONFESSION OF OUR FAITH

 The sole basis of our beliefs is the Bible, God's infallible written Word, the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments. We believe that it was uniquely, verbally and fully inspired by the Holy Spirit and that it was written without error (inerrant) in the original manuscripts. It is the supreme and final authority in all matters on which it speaks.

We accept those areas of doctrinal teaching on which, historically, there has been general agreement among all true Christians. Because of the specialization of our calling, we desire to allow for freedom of conviction on other doctrinal matters, provided that any interpretation is based upon the Bible alone.

1.            There is one true God, eternally existing in three persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - each of whom possesses equally all the attributes of Deity and the characteristics of personality.

2.            Jesus Christ is God, the living Word, who became flesh through His miraculous conception by the Holy Spirit and His virgin birth. Hence, He is perfect Deity and true humanity united in one person forever.

3.            He lived a sinless life and voluntarily atoned for the sins of men by dying on the cross as their substitute, thus satisfying divine justice and accomplishing salvation for all who trust in Him alone.

4.            He rose from the dead in the same body, though glorified, in which He lived and died.

5.            He ascended bodily into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God the Father, where He, the only mediator between God and man, continually makes intercession for His own.

6.            Man was originally created in the image of God. He sinned by disobeying God; thus, he was alienated from his Creator. That historic fall brought all mankind under divine condemnation.

7.            Man's nature is corrupted, and he is thus totally unable to please God. Every man is in need of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit.

8.            The salvation of man is wholly a work of God's free grace and is not the work, in whole or in part, of human works or goodness or religious ceremony. God imputes His righteousness to those who put their faith in Christ alone for their salvation, and thereby justified them in His sight.

9.            It is the privilege of all who are born again of the Spirit to be assured of their salvation from the very moment in which they trust Christ as their Savior. This assurance is not based upon any kind of human merit, but is produced by the witness of the Holy Spirit, who confirms in the believer the testimony of God in His written word.

10.          The Holy Spirit has come into the world to reveal and glorify Christ and to apply the saving work of Christ to men. He convicts and draws sinners to Christ, imparts new life to them, continually indwells them from the moment of spiritual birth and seals them until the day of redemption. His fullness, power and control are appropriated in the believer's life by faith.

11.          Every believer is called to live so in the power of the indwelling Spirit that he will not fulfill the lust of the flesh but will bear fruit to the glory of God.

12.          Jesus Christ is the Head of the Church, His Body, which is composed of the living and dead, those who have been joined to Him through saving faith.

13.          God admonishes His people to assemble together regularly for worship, for participation in ordinances, for edification through the Scriptures and for mutual encouragement.

14.          At physical death the believer enters immediately into eternal, conscious fellowship with the Lord and awaits the resurrection of his body to everlasting glory and blessing. 

15.          Jesus Christ will come again to the earth - personally, visibly and bodily - to consummate history and the eternal plan of God.
